What does it take to quickly win multiple Interviews in a noisy, crowded, hyper-competitive job market?

The global recession of 2008-09 caused a seismic shift in the job market. As a recruiter, I had a close-up view of the bloodbath.

The primary fallouts of the recession were job losses (ran into thousands in several industries and resulted in millions of job losses worldwide), a shrinking job market (fewer openings as companies and industries saw a decline in revenue, and as consumer demand fell), and increased competition for the same number of jobs (hyper-competition).

It’s been 15 years since the recession, but its effects can be felt even today. Every time there’s talk of resurgence, one industry or the other slips and the job losses mount. Add to that the trade wars between countries, price wars between companies, technological changes, the impact of the COVID pandemic, a funding winter, the AI invasion, etc. and you have a recurring job market crisis. All this is to say if you’re not on your toes, you’ll end up on your back.

You are safe—until you aren't

As humans, we suffer from ‘Optimism Bias.’ This means deep down we believe that bad things won’t happen to us—whether that’s an accident or a job loss. Optimism Bias is a universal phenomenon and is suprisingly powerful. Fortunately, the Insurance industry has done a good job at marketing its products and today most of us are insured (a good thing, just in case life plays a cruel joke).

Unfortunately, there is no insurance for a job loss. While you may like to believe you are immune to a job loss (Optimism Bias at play), you’re not. If you still believe otherwise, talk to qualified, talented, skilled people who have lost / quit their jobs and ask them if they saw it coming. Remember that job losses don’t always have to result from industry downturns or bad business strategy or a weak CEO or a fall in consumer demand or price wars, they can also be due to office politics / declining company culture / entry of a bad boss, lack of recognition / respect, job dissatisfaction, poor training & development, stress & longer working hours, etc.

If I have learnt anything in my career as a Recruiter, it’s this: Always be ready to find a new job. And that means, first and foremost, building a world-class Resume that can win you multiple interviews in a noisy, crowded, hyper-competitive job market. It means writing a powerful, persuasive Results-oriented Resume that will win you multiple interviews even in a recessive economy.

THE RESULTS-ORIENTED RESUME WRITING SERVICE

RORIconbreak

The fastest and best way to win multiple Interviews, perform well in those interviews, and win multiple attractive job offers

I began writing resumes (paid assignments) in 2006. In 2009, I was compelled to take a hard look at my Resume Writing strategy. This was because my success percentage (of winning interviews for my Resume Writing clients) had dropped significantly.

I had forgotten that a high tide lifts all boats. When times are good any Resume Writing / Job Search strategy will work since the market is flourishing. But in a recessive market where there are fewer high-quality jobs and several high-quality candidates, I realised newer and more potent strategies must be developed.

New Challenges, New Strategies

It was during the recession that I began studying resumes of candidates who were thriving and succeeding despite the job shortage. These people were changing jobs at will and it was almost as if the recession had no effect on them. I decided to study, dissect, and adopt their strategies to revise my Resume Writing process.

As I studied and analysed these resumes, a few patterns emerged. All these people had quantified the results they had delivered, as against merely listing their achievements. Few of them had quantified AND contextualized the results they had delivered—this threw more focus on their results and additionally, it was obvious that it had a positive effect on their interview performance (which they confirmed on the call). Nearly all them demonstrated solid business acumen and this was a result of writing for interview performance, as against writing for winning interviews. (This point is absolutely crucial, and it led to a pivotal shift in my Resume Writing strategy.)

Note: During this process, I ignored resumes of people from premiere institutes since they could win interviews simply by the virtue of their institute’s brand name, regardless of how bland their Resume.

Using these and few other key strategies, I developed the CARCI® framework. This was in 2009. Over the last 20 years, I have refined it and I can confidently state it is the best Resume Writing strategy in existence.

Yes, that’s a bold claim. But I am confident because I have looked at Resume Writing strategies from around the world (including those that run into thousands of dollars). The CARCI framework is the heart of the Results-oriented Resume and it’s the same strategy I have used, over and over, to help my clients win interviews with top companies, and to increase their salary offers and negotiation power. After all these years of putting it to use and seeing first-hand how quickly and efficiently it wins interviews, I have no doubt that the Results-oriented Resume is the Passport to a secure, financially rewarding career.

Your Resume is a Marketing Document

Even if companies have fantastic products, they still need a smart Marketing plan. Many products have had to bite the dust because their Marketing wasn’t up to the mark. In fact, good Marketing can take an average product and turn it into a blockbuster product. There is ample evidence for this in just about every industry. Marketing is the 20% that brings 80% of the results.

Similarly—it doesn’t matter how competent or qualified a candidate you are, or how average you may believe you are—you need superior Marketing.

That’s the job of your Resume—to Market you and to help you outshine and outclass your competition, and to turn you in an attractive, high-value candidate. And the best way to do that is to use a Results-oriented Resume.

Your Resume is a Marketing document

Other things being equal, a successful Career is a result of successful Marketing. If you cannot Market and Endorse yourself with flair, you may not receive many interview invitations.

Your Resume is the primary Marketing collateral in your arsenal.

I evaluate and tweak your Results-oriented Resume to demonstrate your maximum possible value to the target companies. Once you have a Results-oriented resume in place, you will greatly improve your odds of winning multiple interviews with target companies.

Show them Value and they'll show you the Money

When shortlisting Resumes, companies look for VALUE. Broadly, ‘Value’ means 3 things: 1) Your educational pedigree, 2) the companies you have worked with, and 3) the results you have delivered.

What matters most are the Results you have delivered and how you articulate those results in your resume. A Results-oriented candidate is a highly attractive and valuable candidate, and my Resume writing course and Consulting practice are designed to increase your market value and significantly increase your Income.

Marketing + Interviews

A Resume must serve 2 purposes:

The smart way to move forward is to build and own a Resume that achieves both these goals

Are you prepared to
defeat your competition?
Or is your competition
going to defeat you?

In a job search, the competition is intense. Assuming the company has exhausted its list of internal candidates, you are competing with candidates from the company’s internal database (acquired over the years), job portal advertisements, LinkedIn and other social media advertisements, recruitment agencies, referrals, etc. For almost every role, you are competing with at least 100-odd candidates from a wide range of sources. That’s 100 candidates for 1 position. To say that the competition is intense, is actually an understatement.

Hence, it’s not enough to move forward with the hope that just because you are good at your job, you will win the interview. What about the 99 others? Is it not possible that they, too, are good at their jobs? Perhaps better than you?

Set aside blind optimism and opt for cold, clinical objectivity. That’s my approach to all aspects of job search and career development—writing resumes, interview performance, salary negotiation, communication skills, confidence building—I tackle each area / skill with objectivity and time-tested processes, not hope or faith or optimism.

I take a logical, clinical approach to auditing and improving resumes. When you work with me, I’ll show you ‘what’, ‘why’ and ‘how’ of taking control of your resume. My process will greatly improve your odds of getting short listed for interviews.

  • Increase the number of interviews you win (application:shortlisting ratio). More interviews = more offers
  • Improve your interview performance across all rounds. Better interviews = more offers
  • Rise to the top 1% of the candidate pool

Remember: Being good at your job, and being good at getting shortlisted for interviews are 2 distinct and separate skills. When you are good at both, you are primed to make the most of the opportunities that come your way.

As you move forward in your career, you will come across dozens of excellent opportunities—will you be prepared for them, or will you continue to waste those opportunities?
